5.3 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Japan

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Tokyo and surrounding areas on Friday evening.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck just before 8 p.m. and measured less than 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in the worst-hit areas, including the city of Atsugi in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo.

Officials said the quake was centered in the western part of Kanagawa at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) and caused buildings to shake.

Railway operators said Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train services were temporarily halted. They all resumed within about 10 minutes.

The operator of the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train line said it resumed services at around 9 p.m. after suspending some sections following an earthquake that struck eastern Japan late Friday.

Odakyu Electric Railway Co. said services resumed at 3:50 a.m. Saturday after being suspended for safety checks.

Professor Sakai Shinichi of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo spoke about the 5.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Kanagawa Prefecture on Friday evening.

He pointed out that the huge earthquake that might occur in the Nankai Basin in the Pacific Ocean would be generated at the meeting point of tectonic plates.

He added that this mechanism is different from the mechanism of Friday's earthquake, which is believed to have started inside the Earth's crust.

Sakai claimed that such an earthquake could be a prelude to a larger one, and that it was undeniable that the recent earthquake would affect future seismic activity. He said people needed to stay alert.

The professor noted that earthquakes of this magnitude occur in the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture once every few years.

He said he believed many people might be concerned that this quake was linked to a potential major earthquake in the Nankai Basin.

Sakai said disaster preparedness is very important because earthquakes of this magnitude can occur anywhere in Japan.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
