Earthquake warning system activated on Tuesday
Thousands of smartphones lit up with alerts Tuesday evening as a 5.2-magnitude earthquake rattled central and southern California. Tuesday’s quake struck at 9:09 p.m. in Lamont, near Bakersfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Dozens of aftershocks rattled the area, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.6, into Wednesday morning.
This latest quake has put California’s newly developed earthquake early warning system to the test. Gov. Gavin Newsom launched the earthquake early warning system in late 2019, marking the 30th anniversary of the catastrophic 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people. Using highly sensitive ground motion sensors, the system can record seismic activity before humans feel the tremors. It also instantly sends out flashing alerts to warn people in the affected area before the strongest shaking begins.
Last Tuesday was a testament to the effectiveness of Newsom’s earthquake detection technology. According to a news release from Newsom’s office, the Earthquake Early Warning System notified millions of Californians, some as early as 35 seconds before an earthquake began. The warning time varied across the state, with alerts spreading faster the closer they were to the epicenter. The news release explained that in addition to alerting individuals, California uses the Earthquake Early Warning System to automate preventative actions, such as shutting off water and gas valves, closing bridge gates, and notifying school and medical personnel.
The alerts are powered by ShakeAlert, a computer program operated by the U.S. Geological Survey. ShakeAlert works with the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to calculate earthquake magnitudes and estimate areas of the state where shaking will occur.
Early warning technology is built into most smartphones, allowing alerts to be seamlessly sent to millions within seconds. MyShake, an app powered by ShakeAlert, is also available for free download on smartphones. Newsom’s office notes that MyShake sent 517,354 alerts on Tuesday and that after Tuesday’s earthquake there were more than 46,692 new downloads of the MyShake app in just 12 hours.
