Japan issues first 'major earthquake' warning after 7.1-magnitude quake hits country

Japan issued its first-ever warning of a higher-than-usual risk of a major earthquake after a 7.1-magnitude quake struck the edge of a volatile seabed along the Pacific coast known as the Nankai Trough on Thursday. A massive quake and tsunami in the Nankai could kill hundreds of thousands of people and cause $1 trillion in damage to Japan.

Total economic damage could reach 220 trillion yen ($1.50 trillion), or more than a third of Japan's annual GDP, with long-lasting impacts on infrastructure and supply chains for coastal industrial powerhouses that produce cars and other key Japanese products.
