Southern California is seeing increased seismic activity a day after a 4.4-magnitude quake shook homes across Los Angeles, seismologists said.
By mid-August, the area had seen 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater this year. Southern California typically sees 10 to 12 earthquakes of that magnitude each year.
“We are seeing a continuous process of earthquakes occurring along this fault,” said Dr Lucy Jones, a geophysicist.
The recent quake near South Pasadena occurred along the Bounty Hills gravity fault system, which runs from Bounty Hills above Whittier to Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, said Jones, a prominent researcher at the California Institute of Technology. That system has the potential to cause significant damage.
“It's the most destructive fault line of any earthquake in Southern California because of its location, because it runs under old structures and densely populated areas,” Jones said.
Jones added that earthquakes here can be five to 10 times more destructive than those that occur along the San Andreas Fault. In fact, the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake occurred along the Puente Hills fault system. The 5.9-magnitude quake killed eight people and damaged thousands of buildings.
However, Jones said earthquakes are more common on the San Andreas Fault. Large earthquakes along the Puente Hills Fault typically occur at intervals of thousands of years.
