Volcano erupts after 7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Russia's Kamchatka region

Russia's Shiveluch volcano erupted, sending a column of ash up to eight kilometers (five miles) high, following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the country's eastern coast, CNN reported, citing state media agency TASS.

The volcano erupted a burst of lava and no injuries were reported, according to reports.

An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka region at a depth of 51 kilometers, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

There were conflicting reports about tsunami warnings. The US National Tsunami Warning Center said there was a tsunami threat from the earthquake. But the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said there was no tsunami threat.

Russian officials added that the aftershocks recorded from the earthquake ranged in magnitude from 3.9 to 5.0.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 29 kilometres (18 miles) below the Earth's surface and was centred about 102 kilometres (63 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of more than 181,000 people surrounded by volcanoes and across a bay from a major Russian submarine base.

Shiveluch Volcano, located about 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is a massive and permanently active volcano. Known as one of the largest and most volatile volcanoes in the world, it has a history of frequent and powerful eruptions.

A Russian news agency reported that the earthquake did not cause “significant damage” and that “buildings are now being examined for possible damage, with special attention paid to social facilities.”

The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu warned of possible slight sea level fluctuations in some coastal areas near the earthquake site for several hours.
