A volcano erupted near a major naval base on Russia's eastern coast early Sunday morning after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean about 63 miles away, according to Russian state-run media. That briefly triggered a “red” warning for aircraft.

The Shiveluch volcano erupted on Sunday morning, spewing a column of ash up to 5 miles above sea level and releasing a stream of lava, TASS news agency reported, citing scientists from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The volcano is located about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of more than 181,000 people in the Kamchatka region of eastern Russia. The city is surrounded by volcanoes and lies across a bay from an important Russian submarine base.

The institute said the Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands sent ash 1.5 miles into the air. The institute did not explicitly say whether the earthquake caused the explosions.

The Kamchatka volcano eruption response team reported that a warning of a “red” ash cloud briefly put all aircraft in the region on alert. A separate report by TASS on Sunday said no commercial flights were disrupted and no damage was caused to aviation infrastructure.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 18 miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Its epicenter was about 63 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. There were no initial reports of damage or injuries from the quake.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, but it was later lifted.

The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially warned of the possibility of dangerous tsunami waves for coasts within 300 miles (480 kilometers) of the quake's epicenter, but later declared the threat over.

The center said that slight fluctuations in sea level may occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake site for several hours.
