Double quake puts Ibaraki on alert for more tremors

Two earthquakes struck Ibaraki Prefecture and surrounding areas early on the morning of Aug. 19, prompting authorities to warn residents to remain on alert for strong tremors over the next week.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of the prefecture at 12:48 a.m., followed two minutes later by a 5.1-magnitude quake in the same location, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The second earthquake registered a magnitude of 5 on the Japanese 7-point scale at Hitachi.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

However, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the possibility of earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of less than 5 during the next week.

The depth of the second earthquake was 8 kilometers.

The quake caused a magnitude 4.0 quake in Takahagi, north of Hitachi, while Hitachiota, Hitachinaka, Tokai and other municipalities in the prefecture experienced a magnitude 3.0 quake.

Parts of Fukushima, Tochigi and Saitama prefectures also recorded a 3.5-magnitude earthquake.
