Earthquake hits Newcastle and Sydney

An earthquake struck the Upper Hunter region on Friday afternoon, and was felt in Newcastle, parts of Sydney and the South Coast.

The Australian Geoscience Service said the epicentre of the 5.0 magnitude quake was near Denman, 26 kilometres west of Muswellbrook, at about 12.01pm on August 23.

It was recorded at a depth of 10 km.

Shortly after the quake, social media was abuzz with people asking about the source of the tremors.

Some reported that their apartment moved or that the wall-mounted TV shook.

It is understood that residents in Wollongong were also hit by aftershocks.

This part of the valley is no stranger to earthquakes, with many locals believing that these quakes are closely linked to nearby mining activity.

NSW Police have been informed that NSW Emergency Services crews are responding to reports of minor damage to infrastructure.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

He also urged dam owners in the area to ensure that the safety of the dam is not affected.

Any damage or injury should be reported to the relevant local authorities.
