Earthquake felt on central coast

The Australian Geoscience Service says the town of Denman, near Muswellbrook, was the site of a major earthquake felt across much of the Central Coast at 12:02pm on Friday, August 23.

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck, reportedly at a depth of 10 kilometres, and was felt across New South Wales, including the Central Coast and Newcastle.

Measuring stations at Mangrove Dam and Kincumber High School also recorded the quake, although stations as far away as Canberra recorded activity according to official Australian Geoscience data.

The Australian Geoscience Service said the Denman area in the Hunter Valley was the epicentre of major seismic activity.

Coast Community News is monitoring reports of the earthquake being felt by a large number of residents across the coast.

The discovery site is located approximately 180 kilometres northwest of Sydney.

No damage was reported at the time of publication.
