Fact check: 9.0 magnitude Kashmir earthquake warning is fake, dates back to last year

Srinagar, August 23: Two consecutive earthquakes jolted parts of Kashmir on Tuesday morning (August 20). The epicentre of the quake, according to the National Centre for Seismology, was in Baramulla district of north Kashmir at a depth of just 5 km.

As people recovered from the shock and resumed their normal lives, unconfirmed information began to spread online, especially via the X app, and messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp, adding to the panic.

The information mentioned that a scientist had warned of a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hitting Kashmir in the coming days, which made people worried and they continued to post about it, wondering what they should do in such a situation.

However, the Greater Kashmir Foundation analyzed the information, conducted a reverse image search, and came to the conclusion that the misinformation was created from an article published by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) last year.

Roger Bilham, a fellow at the Institute for Environmental and Social Research, had predicted “a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Kashmir, although it was unexpected.” Bilham and his team have been studying the rates of crustal deformation in the region for the past eight years.

But their prediction failed, a year passed and nothing they had hoped for happened.

It is impossible to predict earthquakes worldwide, even minutes before they strike an area.

It is worth noting that Kashmir falls within the fourth seismic zone and is vulnerable to earthquakes.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
