A strong earthquake struck at 10.37pm yesterday and was felt in many places in the capital area.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.1 and its source was 3 km northeast of Stora-Skogfell mountain. Its source was measured at a depth of 3.6 km.

The sources are not located at the fissure or above the magma tunnel, but it is more likely a release of stress in the Earth's crust, says Einar Besse Geistson, a natural hazards expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

No earthquakes of this magnitude have accompanied eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula this year.
