Sydney hit by rare 4.7 magnitude earthquake

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Sydney and surrounding areas, causing minor damage but no injuries, local officials said. It was the strongest quake to hit the Sydney area in 30 years.

The quake struck at 12:01 p.m. on Friday, with its epicentre near Denman, a small town along the Golden Highway in New South Wales, about 69 miles northwest of Newcastle or 105 miles north of Sydney.

The Australian Geoscience Agency said the quake measured 4.7 magnitude, down from a previous estimate of 5.0, and was just three miles deep. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was slightly stronger, at 4.8 magnitude.

“The earthquake was widely felt in the Newcastle and Sydney areas, with more than 3,000 reports of being felt, including as far away as Wollongong,” the Australian Geoscience Service said in a statement. “With the epicentre at a depth of about 5 kilometres, the earthquake was very shallow, which explains the large number of reports.”

The New South Wales Emergency Service said there were no reports of injuries but crews responded to minor damage to infrastructure in Maitland and Muswellbrook. Authorities urged dam owners in the area to ensure the safety of their dams was not affected.

“Any damage or injuries should be reported to the relevant local authorities,” police said in a statement.

Earth sciences seismologist Dr Hadi Ghasemi said more than 150 earthquakes have been recorded in the area in the past 20 years, but none as strong as this one. According to the US Geological Survey, the last earthquake stronger than the previous one in the Sydney area was a 5.3 magnitude quake near Illalong in August 1994.

“Moderate to large earthquakes can occur anywhere across the continent, and without warning. On average, Australia experiences an earthquake of this size once every year or two,” Ghasemi said.

In September 2021, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Mansfield in the Victorian Alps, causing minor damage and injuring one person. In 1989, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Newcastle, killing 13 people.
