It is difficult to reconcile what is happening in Myanmar's civil war. But the BBC has managed to build a picture of what happened on the evening of August 5 through exclusive interviews and videos they shared with more than a dozen Rohingya survivors who fled to Bangladesh. All the survivors – unarmed Rohingya civilians – report that many bombs exploded within two hours. While most described bombs dropped by drones, a weapon increasingly used in Myanmar, some said they were hit by mortars and gunfire. Videos of survivors examined by BBC Verify show a riverbank littered with bloodied bodies, many of them women and children. There is no verified count of the number of people killed, but several witnesses have told the BBC that they saw many bodies. Survivors say they were attacked by the Arakan Army, one of Myanmar's most powerful insurgent groups, which has driven the military from across Rakhine State in recent months. The AA declined to be interviewed, but spokesman Khaing Tukha denied the allegation and told BBC questions that “the incident did not happen in areas under our control”.
