The night before the earthquake, I was pampered by my aunts, which left me with a severe hangover the next day. I woke up completely naked when I saw the chandelier in the living room swing so violently that it hit the ceiling.

At the time, I was living at The Riverfront Residences, and the sound was like the Titanic splitting in half. The power went out, and all my belongings flew into the air. I staggered to the closet, only to find that the rod had fallen. In the dark, I fumbled around and grabbed a sheer cashmere dress. Normally, I would wear a nightgown underneath, but this was an emergency—no time for modesty.

Once I got dressed, I realized I had to check on my work. My car was two floors underground and out of reach, so my friend, let's call him Carlos, came to pick me up. He worked for my mom, and we had to stop by her office first to check on the fire pump.

When we arrived at The Painted Lady, Jefferson Street was pitch black and full of chimney bricks. Fortunately, The Painted Lady, my work, is a sturdy 1940s house that had suffered only minor damage—just a loose chimney that I couldn’t see in the dark anyway. Exhausted, I went back to bed.

The next day, I drove around town with my family to survey the damage. When I got home, I saw the coroner’s car parked outside Riverfront. I silently prayed that the Lord would take my horrible neighbor Bill, who was also the president of the homeowners association at the time. Sadly, it turned out that one of my favorite neighbors had died three days earlier, and no one had checked on him until the earthquake. With the power out, his body had to be carried down three flights of stairs.

Later, I went to the bathroom to contemplate this tragedy. I sat there for so long that my legs went numb. When the aftershock hit, I couldn't even run for my life.
