A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific kingdom of Tonga on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, as foreign leaders gathered for a key regional summit.

Nuku'alofa, the coastal capital of Tonga, is hosting the Pacific Islands Forum, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres among the high-profile delegations.

Although the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning, some businesses near the coast were briefly evacuated to higher ground.

The offshore quake – which struck at a depth of about 106 kilometres (66 miles) – caused buildings to shake at the site of the newly built forum.

But things quickly returned to normal in a city where earthquakes are relatively common.

Tonga lies atop the seismic Ring of Fire, an arc of intense tectonic activity that extends across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin.

Vast areas of the Tongan archipelago were covered in ash and hit by tsunamis after the massive Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted in 2022.
