5.4 magnitude earthquake hits Islamabad and Khurais

An earthquake struck Islamabad and cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday.

Meanwhile, earthquakes hit cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including Peshawar, Swat, North Waziristan, Hangu, Mardan, Malakand, Buner, Shangla, Dir, Mansehra, Begram, Torgarh, Kohistan, Abbottabad and Kurram.

The tremors were also felt in cities of Punjab including Lahore, Multan, Chakwal and Sargodha.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the earthquake struck at 10:57 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time and measured 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The Meteorological Office added that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometers.

Today's tremors come nearly two months after a 4.7-magnitude quake struck parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in June.

This earthquake was preceded by another earthquake measuring 3.2 degrees in Karachi in the same month.

Last May, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck parts of the capital including Gadap town, Kathuhar and adjoining areas of Malir district.

Prior to this, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck Karachi's Malir area on April 24.

It is worth noting that earthquakes are not uncommon in Pakistan, as the country lies on the border of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Large parts of South Asia experience seismic activity because a tectonic plate known as the Indian plate is pushing north into the Eurasian plate.
