In January, the UN Supreme Court ordered in an interim ruling that Israel must take all measures to “prevent and punish” genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza – including incitement to genocide – but stopped short of calling a halt to the war. The expected trial at the International Court of Justice was part of a case brought to the court by South Africa, accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Israel has called the accusation “totally baseless”. Since the verdict, Israel has been accused of continuing inflammatory public statements. BBC News Arabic has analyzed such statements and investigated what measures Israel has taken to avoid incitement to Genocide. The Israeli army launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in Gaza in response to the October 7 attack in southern Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and took another 251 hostages. Since then, more than 40,430 people have died in Gaza, according to the territory's Hamas-run Health Ministry.
