An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Thursday, with tremors felt in New Delhi and nearby areas. The National Earthquake Center said the quake struck at around 11:26 a.m. local time, at a depth of 255 kilometers (155 miles).

The agency said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 36.51 degrees north latitude and 71.12 degrees east longitude in Afghanistan.

There were no reports of injuries or damage from the tremors. As news of the quake spread, many took to Twitter to share their experiences. Some pointed out that the capital had also been hit by heavy rains earlier, causing flooding and traffic jams.

Delhi woke up to massive traffic jam after rains

Images from ITO and other parts of central Delhi showed long traffic jams while areas like Malviya Nagar, MB Road in Sangam Vihar, Mukarba Chowk and Rohtak Road towards Tikri border were affected due to waterlogging and uprooted trees due to the storm.

While the Delhi Traffic Police has restored normalcy in some areas, several people complained that vehicular movement on Rajokri Bridge, Ganjhwala Road towards Buddha Vihar, Aurobindo Marg near BTS Metro station remained slower than usual.

Meanwhile, data showed that earthquake-related hashtags were trending in India on Twitter. By 2 p.m., nearly 8,000 posts with the earthquake hashtag had been shared on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
