Humboldt County to be reimbursed for repairs to fair's main grandstands after December 2022 earthquake, aftershocks – Times Standard

On December 20, 2022, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Humboldt County. Following the initial earthquake, the county experienced more than 200 aftershocks, including a 5.4 magnitude on New Year's Day 2023, resulting in a significant increase in reported structural damage.

Earthquakes that rocked Humboldt County caused damage to several structures, including the grandstands at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in Ferndale.

In early 2023, a structural engineering inspection determined that the fairgrounds’ grandstands were not safe for public use due to earthquake damage. In June 2023, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $1 million funding plan to fund grandstand repairs, ensuring they would be safe for the public to enjoy when visiting the fairgrounds. Temporary grandstand support repairs were completed in August 2023. These repairs stabilized the grandstands to an acceptable level of safety for public use while permanent repairs were designed and implemented.

The accumulated costs of repairing the earthquake damage to the stands have been submitted to the state as part of the reimbursement process, and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) recently reimbursed just over $836,200 for the majority of the initial earthquake-related stand repair costs. This reduces the county’s contribution to temporary stand repairs to approximately $164,000. The $836,200 reimbursed to the county can now be used for other priority capital infrastructure repair or replacement projects.

Achieving immediate results in long-term disaster recovery is difficult, and the Humboldt County Department of Public Works continues to work in partnership with the Humboldt County Fair Board and the California Department of Emergency Services to determine the best course of action to implement permanent repairs to the stands and other buildings at the fairgrounds that were damaged by the earthquakes.
