Earthquake risk

It's only a matter of time before another major earthquake hits California. And since September is National Preparedness Month, here are some tips and a historical look at earthquakes that have struck us.

What you can do today

Prepare and protect your home before an earthquake strikes. Reduce your risk of damage and injury from an earthquake by identifying potential hazards to your home. Complete your earthquake plan by identifying and securing the following hazards:

Tall, heavy furniture that could tip over, such as bookcases, china cabinets, or modular wall units. Water heaters that don’t meet California law that could explode. Stoves and appliances that could move enough to rupture gas or electrical lines. Plants hanging in heavy pots that could swing without hooks. Heavy picture frames or mirrors above the bed. Kitchen cabinet or other cabinet latches that won’t close when shaken. Fragile or heavy items stored on high or open shelves. A construction chimney that could collapse and fall through an unsupported roof into your home. Flammable liquids, such as paint or cleaning products, which may be safer in a garage or outside in a shed.

You can learn about earthquake insurance at the California Department of Insurance.

If you have homeowners insurance in California, your company must offer to sell you earthquake insurance. You must offer this insurance every two years.

There are limits to how much earthquake insurance will pay. Earthquake insurance is meant to help you rebuild a roof over your head. It doesn't reimburse you for everything you lose.

The offer must be in writing, and it must tell you what amounts are covered, the deductible and the premium.

You have 30 days to accept the offer.

The California Earthquake Authority provides the largest amount of earthquake insurance in California.

This map is from the National Earthquake Hazard Model released earlier this year. The map shows the probability of a damaging earthquake occurring in the United States over the next 100 years.

Plate motion

Plate movement along the San Andreas Fault is about 1.3 inches per year—roughly the rate at which your fingernails grow. A 2017 report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) detailed the southern San Andreas Fault. The study found evidence of 10 ground-shattering earthquakes with magnitudes between 7.0 and 7.5 between A.D. 800 and 1857. The survey-based forecasts projected a 16 percent chance of a magnitude 7.5 or greater earthquake occurring near Kern County in the next 30 years.

Predictive models

The USGS warns that while its latest forecast model has improved significantly since its release in 2008, it is still approximate. The USGS uses two types of scientific models to predict the likelihood of earthquakes.

1. Earthquake rupture forecasts show where and when the ground might slip along the state's many faults.

2. The ground motion prediction model estimates the subsequent shaking resulting from a fault rupture.

Major Earthquakes in California

Below is a list of major earthquakes that have struck California. These are earthquakes that had a magnitude of 6.5 or greater, or that caused loss of life or damage exceeding $200,000. The list is not adjusted for inflation. This list includes major earthquakes that had their epicenters outside California but within about 100 miles of the California border. The list goes back to the most recent earthquake in 1933.

Above, John Muir School in Long Beach was severely damaged by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on March 10, 1933. More than 230 school buildings were damaged by the quake, which struck at 5:54 p.m. The devastation prompted the state to enact a series of earthquake-resistant building codes, including one requiring all school buildings to be earthquake-resistant.

The USGS estimates long-term earthquake hazards to give communities an assessment of the risks in their area. More than two-thirds of the nation's annual earthquake losses will occur in California, and in California, 80 percent of the losses will occur in the following 10 counties:

Top 10 Counties by Estimated Annual Earthquake Losses (Percentage of State Total)

Los Angeles (30.6%) Santa Clara (8.9%) Alameda (8%) Orange (7%) San Bernardino (6%) Riverside (5.6%) Contra Costa (4.6%) San Francisco (3.8%) San Mateo (3.5%) San Diego (3.3%)

Motion control

In the late 1980s, the USGS monitored 16 faults (the main ones). In 1994, the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake struck on an unrecognized fault line. It was said to be the costliest earthquake in U.S. history, and scientists began searching for and monitoring many more fault lines in the state. In 2017, there were 350 fault lines monitored.
