Tokyo commemorates victims of 1923 Kanto earthquake

A memorial ceremony was held in Tokyo on Sunday to commemorate the victims of the Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck the capital and surrounding areas exactly 101 years ago.

The massive earthquake occurred on September 1, 1923. More than 100,000 people were killed by the earthquake and subsequent fires.

The ceremony was held at a memorial hall in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, where the remains of some 58,000 quake victims are buried. This year's ceremony was scaled back due to a typhoon.

This service is held every year on September 1 in honor of the victims of the earthquake. It also commemorates the victims of the American air raid on Tokyo on March 10, 1945, during World War II.

The chairman of the organizing committee said that the lessons learned from the tragic events of the disaster and war must be passed on to future generations.

A man in his 80s said he comes every year to remember his uncle, who was 5 or 6 years old at the time of the quake. The man said he heard that his uncle was trapped under a pillar in his house, and that his family could not help him and had no choice but to leave him.

Another ceremony was held to commemorate Koreans killed in violence following the 1923 earthquake. The organizer of the event was among those who asked Tokyo Governor Koike to send a separate message of mourning.

Koike refrained from sending a separate message as she has done since 2017. She explained that the message she sent to the earthquake memorial ceremony expressed her condolences to all the victims.

The head of the group that organized the memorial for the Korean victims said the former governors sent separate letters with the understanding that commemorating those killed by people who believed rumors is different from mourning those who died in a natural disaster.

“It is unfortunate that Koike seems unwilling to acknowledge historical facts,” he said.
