Minnesota United pulled off a rare home win, beating last-place Earthquakes 2-1.

Minnesota United hasn't done much to make it through the summer. The Loons beat Sporting Kansas City on June 1, but since then they've only won one MLS game.

On Saturday night, the Loons picked up another win, beating San Jose 2-1 – the second time this summer they've beaten the Earthquakes, who are last in the league.

Despite all the changes the Loons have made, they may just need to work on figuring out how to schedule more games against San Jose.

The winner came from Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 64th minute, a goal that will not win any Goal of the Week award. A long throw-in from Joseph Rosales hit Hlongwane in front of the San Jose goal, and it took Hlongwane three attempts to get the ball into the Earthquakes net. His first attempt from two yards out hit the goalkeeper and the crossbar; his second hit a defender; and he made it three after the ball bounced back to him, but only after it got stuck between the legs of another defender, who was standing a yard from his own goal.

This was Hlongwane's second goal in the match, making him the team's top scorer this season with nine goals this year.

It was Minnesota United's first away win since beating Atlanta on May 4. The Loons have only drawn two and lost six away from Allianz Field since then, in all competitions.

The Loons dominated the early stages of the game, especially whenever San Jose tried to play the ball out of defense. Minnesota was the first to rebound every time, and the Earthquakes couldn’t string together three successful passes. Just nine minutes in, midfielder Hassani Dotson collected a pass in midfield, beat a defender to win an equal ball and pass to midfielder Robin Lude. Lude slipped a pass behind the San Jose defense to Hlongwane, who gave the Loons a 1-0 lead.

“I thought we were very good in the first 20-25 minutes,” said Loons coach Eric Ramsay. “We were really in control of the game, we had really good balance. We had enough possession to control the tempo. We had enough possession to move together. We had enough possession to keep the team together – but we attacked quickly enough to create a lot of good chances, and you could say we could have killed the game off very early on.”
