Minor earthquake hits several parts of Quebec, including Montreal

Residents in several parts of Quebec woke up early Sunday morning to the sound of a small earthquake.

Earthquakes Canada said a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 18 kilometres at about 5:45 a.m. local time. The quake's epicentre was about 20 kilometres northwest of Drummondville and 40 kilometres south of Trois-Rivières.

“The earthquake was felt widely in the area, and we got some reports in Ottawa and Quebec City as well,” said Marique Adams, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

Tremors were also felt in the Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent areas across the Montreal area, including the Laurentians and in the Ottawa area.

Two CBC listeners called in from the town of Lannaure in the Lannaudière region, saying their homes were shaking for several seconds and that their dogs were reacting violently to the tremors.

“In events like this, it often looks like a very large truck or train is passing by,” Adams said, adding that no damage was reported from the quake.

While magnitude 4 earthquakes are relatively rare in eastern Canada, the Montreal area is located in the western Quebec seismic zone, where smaller events occur more often.

“This area includes the Ottawa Valley, all the way to Montreal, Temiskaming, the Laurentians, and eastern Ontario, so it's a major seismic zone,” Adams said.

She added that the region experiences an earthquake approximately every five days, but most of these earthquakes are very small and no one feels them.

Earlier this week, British Columbia's earthquake early detection system was activated to provide the public with a few seconds of warning before a potentially damaging tremor occurs.

Adams said the system will be activated in eastern Canada in the fall.
