6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea and was felt across the region, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck at 7:13 a.m. local time on Monday, with its epicenter near Tokuaca on the island's southern coast, about 178 kilometers (111 miles) southeast of Buka.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.4 magnitude, down from an initial estimate of 6.6. The quake struck at a depth of about 41 kilometers (25 miles), making it a relatively shallow quake.

An estimated 32,000 people live within 30 kilometres (18 miles) of the quake's epicenter, according to the United Nations.

Computer models from the U.S. Geological Survey suggest that as many as 366,000 people may have felt Monday's quake, including 71,000 who may have felt a “strong” tremor.
