Earthquake reports from the British Seismological Service: Earthquakes in Malili and multiple earthquakes in Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake struck the Maleli area in East Luwu, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday morning, September 3, 2024. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a magnitude 4.1 earthquake at 07:26 a.m. local time or 06:26 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Initial reports from the agency indicated that the earthquake was centered on the ground 4 kilometers northeast of the eastern city of Luwu, and at a depth of 5 kilometers.

Malili experienced the strongest shaking on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) scale of 3, which is equivalent to feeling the vibration inside a house as if a truck were passing by.

The Malele earthquake was the first seismic event to be felt today. On Monday, September 2, 2024, the Malaysian Meteorological Department recorded four felt earthquakes.

The first two earthquakes struck on Monday in the early morning hours; one in East Kolaka, southeast Sulawesi, and the other in Melongwan, north Sulawesi.

The East Colacao earthquake, which had its epicenter on land, had a magnitude of 2.7 and a shaking intensity of 2-3 on the Richter scale. The Melonguan earthquake, which had its epicenter in the sea, had a magnitude of 5.1 and a shaking intensity of 4 on the Richter scale, meaning that many people inside homes felt it, causing doors and windows to creak.

Two other earthquakes struck Aceh: a 4.9 magnitude quake in Nagan Raya and a 4.7 magnitude quake in Pidie Jaya. Both quakes were of geological origin and measured 4 on the Richter scale.

According to the Indonesian Meteorology and Seismology Agency, the Nagan Raya earthquake occurred at 07:39 WIB due to the activity of the Semangku (Sumatra) fault in the Central Aceh sector. The strongest shaking was felt in the Benir Meriah and Takengon districts.

The Pidie Jaya earthquake, which occurred at 08:51 p.m. WIB, was also a shallow earthquake triggered by the Semangku Fault in the central part of Aceh. The strongest shaking was recorded in the Man area.
