The cities of Drummondville, Trois-Rivières and Montreal in Quebec were hit by a mild earthquake over the weekend.

The 4.6-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 18 kilometres, 26 kilometres northwest of Drummondville, 35 kilometres from Trois-Rivières and 91 kilometres from Montreal, at 5:43 a.m. Sunday, the Canadian Press reported, citing data from the Canadian Department of Natural Resources.

Although no major damage has been reported, apartment owners are urged to be better prepared for future seismic incidents, especially since damage to buildings caused by an earthquake is not usually covered by insurance for such properties unless they are specifically insured against these risks.

“In Quebec, although earthquakes are less frequent than those on the West Coast, the province remains the second most seismically active region in Canada after British Columbia,” Condolegal's team noted.

The event in Quebec comes just days after British Columbia's earthquake early warning system went live. The earthquake early warning system, which is now operational in British Columbia, is scheduled to begin operating in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec later this year.

“British Columbia is more vulnerable to earthquakes than anywhere else in Canada, and it is important that we use the most advanced methods available to protect people across the province,” said Bowen Ma, BC Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Preparedness.
