Google has announced 5 new features for Android, including earthquake warnings and an improved search circle.

Google is always adding updates to Android, whether it's new ways to experience Google AI — like Gemini Live and Circle to Search — or updated features to improve privacy and security on your phone or better ways to communicate with others, including the ability to edit text messages even after they've been sent.

Today, Google rolled out five more new updates to Android, including a broader earthquake alert system to warn you of a potential earthquake from anywhere in the US, an updated search circle to help you identify music you hear in the real world, and offline maps on your WearOS smartwatch.

Here are the five new updates Google has announced.

1. Get notified before an earthquake starts, no matter where you are in the United States.

Android Earthquake Alerts is a free service that can detect earthquakes and alert you before you feel the shaking. Today, Google announced that the Android Earthquake Alerts System will expand to all 50 states and six territories.

These are the two types of notifications you may receive just before you feel an earthquake.

If an earthquake occurs in your area, you can expect one of two notifications: a “Be Careful” alert and a “Take Action” alert. A “Be Careful” alert is designed to give you advance warning of minor shaking, with information about the location and magnitude of the earthquake. A “Take Action” alert is sent to those who may experience moderate to severe shaking, with information about how to protect yourself.

Once the shaking is over, you can tap the screen for tips on what to do next.

2. Use the “Search Circle” to help discover the music you’re listening to.

Shazam works great for identifying music you hear in the wild, but if you have a phone with Circle to Search, you can now use the AI-powered feature instead to help you find a song, whether it's playing in a bar, in your car, at a restaurant, at a concert, or even on social media.

All you have to do is long-press the home button or navigation bar to launch the circular search feature on your supported phone, then tap the music button next to the Google search button at the bottom of the screen. You should get the name of the track, the artist, and a link to the song on YouTube in the Google search results.

It's hard to use Google Maps when you're somewhere in the middle of the road, because without mobile service, not all of the map features—and maybe none of them—will help you navigate. That's why you should always download Google Maps offline, especially when you're planning a trip.

Fortunately, if you own a WearOS watch, you can now use offline maps on your smartwatch as well. As long as the map is also downloaded to your phone, it will sync to your watch so you can access it directly from your wrist, even if you leave your phone behind.

Google is also bringing two other new Google Maps shortcuts to your smartwatch: You can search for a destination using just your voice, and you can check your surroundings by tapping on your watch face.

You'll be able to use Google Maps offline on the Pixel Watch 3 when it's released.

CNET4. Listen to a webpage out loud in Chrome while you continue browsing the web

Also available today is a new feature that can read any web page, like a long article or recipe, aloud to you from within Chrome.

You can access the feature called “Listen to this page” from the three-dot menu at the top right of any page in your web browser. Once you enable the feature, you’ll see a player at the bottom of the screen with some playback controls. You can pause or play the audio, skip forward or backward 10 seconds, jump to the desired time, and turn on text highlighting and auto-scrolling. Additionally, you can change the listening speed, preferred voice, and language.

You also don't have to stay on the page to continue listening – you can browse the current website, switch to a different tab or even lock the screen and you'll still be able to hear the web page being read aloud.

5. You can also listen to detailed audio descriptions of images, powered by Gemini.

If you use TalkBack on your Android device, you'll now get more detailed audio descriptions of images on your phone or tablet, powered by Gemini AI models on supported devices.

TalkBack is a screen reader from Google that’s built into most Android devices and provides audio feedback so people who have difficulty seeing, whether they’re blind or have low vision, can use their devices without having to look at their screens. You can tap or swipe around the screen, and TalkBack announces what’s on your screen, such as text, buttons, and items, and the accessibility feature may even suggest what to do next.

This new Gemini feature will work on photos in your camera roll, photos in your text messages, photos on social media and the web, and more.
