Android Earthquake Alert System Extends to All of the United States

Google is expanding earthquake alerts on Android to the entire United States and six territories. The feature first launched in 2020, using the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) ShakeAlert system to send warnings in California, Washington, and Oregon. The expansion will use the built-in accelerometers — a device that senses vibrations — in Android phones to issue early alerts.

Android Earthquake Alerts will then look at data collected from the public to determine if the quake is an earthquake. If the quake registers as a magnitude 4.5 or higher, you’ll receive either a “Be careful” or “Take action” alert. The first alert warns you that there’s been mild shaking but that stronger shaking is possible. The “Take action” alert is a call to seek protection immediately, as moderate or severe shaking is expected. The system will also provide information on what to do once the quake has passed.

Google has teamed up with leading earthquake experts to improve Android’s earthquake alert system. “Earthquake alerts on your device reduce the crunching and verification stops that often happen during crises, when people waste valuable time searching for confirmation from untrustworthy sources,” said Dr. Janet Sutton, a professor at the University at Albany who specializes in disaster risk and public alerts. “Expanding this system enhances public safety during earthquakes by providing critical information to more users.”

Google is rolling out a series of new features alongside Earthquake Alerts, including offline maps on the Wear OS smartwatch.
