5.6 magnitude earthquake hits Jomalig, Quezon

MANILA, Philippines – Two earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Gumalig, Quezon province, and were felt in parts of Luzon on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The 5.3 magnitude quake struck at 7:16 a.m., about 43 kilometers northeast of Cumalig, while the second quake struck at 7:55 a.m.

The Philippine Seismological Institute said the first quake was felt at 3.0 in Quezon City, while the quake's intensity was recorded in the following areas:

Intensity 4 – Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte Intensity 3 – Mauban, Guinayangan, Alapat, and General Nakar, Quezon; Dayet, Camarines Norte; Tinambak, Camarines Sur Intensity 2 – Dingalan, Aurora; Gumaca, Lopez, Molanay, and Caluag, Quezon; Sagny, Pasacao, and Rajay, Camarines Sur; Baths, Lake; Marikina City; Tagaytay City, Cavite Intensity 1 – Dolores and Lucban, Quezon; Calamba City, Laguna; Boac, Marinduque; Iriga City, Camarines Sur; Antipolo City and Tanay, Rizal; San Rafael and Marilao, Bulacan; Tabaco City, Albay; Pasig City; Caloocan City

The Philippine Seismological Center said the second earthquake registered the following magnitude:

Intensity 4 – Bolillo, Quezon Intensity 3 – Guinayangan, Alapat, Tagcawayan, Calauag, and Banukulan, Quezon; Makati City; Quezon City Intensity 2 – Lopez and Jumaca, Quezon

Meanwhile, the intensity of the sounds was recorded in the following places:

The two tremors were of tectonic origin, and their epicenters were one kilometer deep.

The institute added that aftershocks are expected, but no property damage is expected.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol noted that the second quake was not a follow-up to the previous one.
