To help us understand why and how this earthquake occurred in our state to join this earthquake by Dr. BOHNENSTIHL, Festive Green Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. good morning. >> I have to tell you, where do I live in the whole house. Some people didn’t even know North Carolina would have had such an earthquake. Why was it so powerful? >> Historically, we’ve had the same type of earthquake. Not so, it is not unexpected but it is not unusual for an earthquake of this magnitude to occur. We could have another year in the next few years or it might never happen until the next 100 years. >> Explain the seismic activity that is occurring across the state. >> When you think of earthquakes, you never think of earthquakes anymore. We don’t have much of the West Coast. Most people are famous for the solid masses in the Earth moving around the so-called tectonic plates. In California, they are on the border, so those panels press on the ground and relieve the pressure that slides on it, and when everyone else slips we can get an earthquake. We have no boundaries between them. But we did it a few million years ago. So they are still in the crust. As time goes by, they get loaded and everything now and then slip off. Sometimes it’s a bigger earthquake but lucky for us, it’s a smaller earthquake that nobody usually feels like. This was a little different, and it got people’s attention. >> We have a female producer who said she was on the second floor of her home and felt an earthquake. On the first floor, her husband didn’t feel anything. How do you explain the difference there? >> The ground is moving underground, so you can imagine on the second floor that you’ve got a little bit of sewage traffic going uphill. Sometimes there are very small earthquakes in Manhattan, and nobody can feel them on the ground but people using a skyscraper can feel the vibration that is amplified if you are on a high floor. >> At your workplace, at your workplace. Across North Carolina, what exactly are you looking to see if this could happen, at a later time or in the next few months? >> We are trying to understand what areas of weakness are there, and what geologists are making maps, when looking at rocks, there is some kind of old weakness or error there. We don’t know it’s active unless we spot a good site. Now we have this earthquake and now we’ll try to locate the post-shock location, although we don’t see much. So the tension is fairly low. We can understand fault engineering and what the future might threaten. We try to collect these things. We might not have much information here on the East Coast. >> Was he far from us all? >> Just always be prepared. I think if you live near the epic center, in the next three days you might feel some difficulties after the shocks. It is always possible but unlikely to increase with time. You have to be prepared for these things.
