Earthquake off Haida Gwaii felt by villagers

Residents of Skidigget and Port Clements felt a small earthquake off the northwest coast of Haida Gwaii last night (September 3).

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 8:17 p.m. off the coast midway between Dajing Geddes and Masset at a depth of 23 kilometers.

No tsunami threat has been detected as a result of this earthquake and no damage has been reported. No aftershocks have been reported.

Thousands of earthquakes are recorded in British Columbia each year. Of these, about 50 are felt by local residents. Earthquakes of this magnitude rarely cause structural damage.

Earthquakes strong enough to cause structural damage occur in British Columbia every decade or so, according to the provincial government.

The last major earthquake was on October 22, 2018, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. The 6.8 magnitude quake was preceded by a 6.6 magnitude quake and a 6.5 magnitude aftershock west of Port Hardy, but it also did not cause a tsunami or major damage.

In 2012, Haida Gwaii experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, causing extensive damage throughout the archipelago.

British Columbia is prone to larger, more destructive events called megaquakes because of its location along the Cascadia subduction zone where the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate collides with the North American continental plate.

Earthquakes up to magnitude 9 can occur in these areas. The last earthquake occurred on January 26, 1700, based on written records of the tsunami that struck Japan and oral histories of the Vancouver Native Nations. On that date, the entire area from northern Vancouver Island to northern California ruptured.

The resulting tsunami destroyed a First Nations winter village at Pashina Bay on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and left no survivors.

Earthquakes of this size occur every 200 to 800 years.
