The Republic of Korea and WHO discuss shared priorities, challenges and trends related to global health
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Republic of Korea have a long-standing partnership spanning more than 75 years. As a result of their fruitful collaboration, there have been significant advances in health and development around the world. The Republic of Korea has gone from being a recipient country to a donor country, and is now a leader in global health and plays a key role on the world stage.
dr. Catharina Boehme, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Management (WHO) and Dr. Hye-Jin Kim, Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination (Ministry of Health and Welfare, Republic of Korea), together with colleagues from WHO and the Government of the Republic of Korea.
To further strengthen this partnership and our commitment to work together to solve global health challenges, WHO and the Republic of Korea convened their second strategic dialogue in Seoul from 28 to 29 August 2024. Dr. Catharina Boehme, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Management, led the WHO delegation, followed by a personal team and colleagues who participated virtually from the three levels of the Organization (headquarters, regional and country offices).
dr. Hye-Jin Kim, Vice Minister for Planning and Coordination, Ministry of Health, led the ROK delegation and was joined by senior officials, including Dr. Young-Mee Jee, Commissioner of the Korea Agency for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as senior colleagues from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
In addition, in line with WHO's work to improve collaboration with parliamentarians, the WHO delegation also met with various members of the National Assembly advocating for the global health agenda.
The recently concluded two-day meeting resulted in the alignment of priorities and paved the way for improved collaboration between WHO and the Government of Korea.
