Magnitude 5.6 quake hits west coast of Sumatra; tremors reach north of Bengkulu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a tectonic earthquake struck the west coast of Sumatra on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 8:06 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Subsequent analysis revised the magnitude of the earthquake to 5.6.

“The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.49 degrees south; 102.62 degrees east, or in the sea 42 kilometers southeast of Engganu and north of Bengkulu and Bengkulu, at a depth of 44 kilometers,” Daryono, head of the agency's earthquake and tsunami center, said in a written statement on Friday, September 6, 2024.

He explained that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth as a result of the subduction of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate. The earthquake showed a thrust fault mechanism.

The earthquake was felt by residents of Engano area with a magnitude of III to IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), while in Bengkulu City, North Bengkulu and Kepahiang it was measured as III MMI. In the West Coast and Liwa areas it was measured as II MMI.

“The modeling results show that the earthquake does not have the potential to generate a tsunami,” Daryono stressed.

As of 8:30 a.m., the seismological agency had not recorded any aftershocks. Daryono urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unconfirmed information.
