One year after devastating Morocco earthquake, remote communities need support to rebuild and recover – Morocco

Islamic Relief says one year after the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Morocco, many survivors are still struggling to rebuild and recover and need ongoing support. Thousands of families in remote rural and mountainous communities still lack adequate shelter and basic services, and damaged infrastructure such as homes and schools need to be rebuilt.

In collaboration with local partners and local authorities, Islamic Relief has supported more than 120 affected villages in the provinces of Al Haouz and Chichaoua over the past year, providing more than 65,000 people with food, winter clothing and hygiene kits, as well as building two temporary schools and setting up mobile health convoys. These convoys provide general medicine, paediatrics, dermatology, cardiology and other vital care to some of the most remote communities.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck central Morocco on September 8, 2023, affected 2.8 million people and killed nearly 3,000. It also destroyed nearly 19,000 homes, damaged another 60,000, and destroyed at least 580 schools, as well as hospitals and other essential infrastructure. The devastation displaced some 500,000 people.

A year on, some families are still living in makeshift shelters and tents, now facing a second winter of displacement. Their tents are exposed to the elements in the Atlas Mountains, where temperatures often drop below zero. Islamic Relief has begun building 300 new homes so people can have protection and privacy.

Many people have lost their jobs and homes, and communities need long-term support. Islamic Relief is committed to supporting people to rebuild their livelihoods so they can earn a reliable living and support their families.

Fatima*, a survivor of the earthquake, recalls: “I was asleep when the earthquake struck. My daughter woke me up terrified and frightened. She was very scared and ran away. Then I noticed that the ceiling of the room had collapsed, and the wall next to me had fallen until I was trapped under the rubble. When I regained consciousness, only my daughter’s fingers were visible from under the rubble. Thank God, we were rescued and we are fine now. “The humanitarian needs were immense in the aftermath of the earthquake, and there are still significant needs throughout the year,” said Ghassan Alimi, Head of Mission at Islamic Relief Morocco. “Thousands of people in the Atlas Mountains are still suffering from the consequences of the earthquake and need our continued support to help them rebuild. In the aftermath of the earthquake, we faced significant challenges as the destruction of important infrastructure and roads made it difficult to reach mountain communities. But thanks to the generosity of supporters around the world, over the past year we have distributed vital aid such as food, blankets, mattresses and hygiene items, and set up health caravans so rural families can access healthcare. We are committed to standing by these communities as they rebuild and recover.”

One year on, the people of Morocco are still trying to rebuild their lives. The reconstruction programme is costly and complex, and with Morocco particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, increased investment in building community resilience is needed.
