Morocco earthquake survivors rebuild their homes with strength

Just before midnight on September 8 last year, a devastating earthquake struck the Al Haouz province of Morocco, killing an estimated 30,000 people and leaving around 380,000 without a roof over their heads.

More than 59,000 homes and at least 530 schools were damaged or destroyed.

The 6.8-magnitude quake was the strongest recorded in Morocco in more than a century and the deadliest since 1960, leaving behind devastation in about 95 towns and villages in the High Atlas mountain range in Al Haouz province, about 72 kilometres from the city of Marrakech.

“One year after the earthquake, despite the rapid response and reconstruction efforts of the authorities, many families, especially those in remote and hard-to-reach mountainous areas, have lost everything and are still living in tents provided by the government and civil society partners,” said Halima Rezkaoui, CARE Morocco Director. “We have therefore prioritized supporting economic recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in some of the most affected villages, providing dignified shelters, ready-made safe spaces for women and schools that enable people to regain some form of normalcy.”

CARE Morocco and its local partners were among the first organizations to respond, distributing tents, food baskets and dignity kits to earthquake-affected communities in 21 villages. CARE’s pre-earthquake programs in rural areas of the region, which engaged women and female-headed households in economic empowerment activities, enabled a rapid response to the emergency.

CARE Maroc has helped build 10 prefabricated kindergartens, as well as safe spaces for women and children in partnership with local organizations. In June, CARE Maroc delivered and installed 60 solar panels to three cooperatives, Tigdelt d'olives, Tiwizi and Zawia.

CARE Maroc has also distributed shelter materials such as tents, blankets and mattresses to over 5,000 people, and supported economic recovery by continuing to provide assistance to village savings and loan associations as well as 25 village cooperatives. CARE is currently organizing cash and voucher assistance that is expected to reach over 3,000 vulnerable households.

“Thanks to the rapid delivery of basic needs and psychological support provided by CARE, I gained resilience and strength, which made me ready and strong to restart my business,” said Zahra, a mother of three who lost her job due to the earthquake.

Before the earthquake, Zahra participated in the Prosperity savings group and enrolled in literacy classes with CARE in hopes of generating more income to better support her family as the head of household and the main breadwinner. When the earthquake struck, Zahra turned to CARE to receive much-needed relief items, including food, hygiene kits, and a tent.

“The sturdy tent we received helped ease our fear and anxiety about sleeping outdoors as winter approached,” Zahra said.

“My mother’s strength gives us hope for the future,” Khadija, Zahra’s daughter.

Today, with support from CARE, Zahra has been able to revive her poultry farming business in the backyard of her destroyed home. With some of the income she has saved, she has been able to help her daughter learn to sew and rebuild her dreams for the future.
