After years without an earthquake, more tremors hit part of South Carolina.
COLUMBIA – For the second time in less than a week, an earthquake has struck South Carolina.
A magnitude 2.1 earthquake was recorded in McCormick County on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Not only was it the second confirmed quake to hit South Carolina in six days, it was also recorded near the same part of the Palmetto State where the previous quake occurred.
The earthquake, which struck at 2:53 a.m. Sunday, was confirmed near Jackson, according to the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of about a half-mile and a half below the Earth's surface, according to the US Geological Survey.
This was the 12th confirmed earthquake this year in South Carolina, after 28 quakes were recorded in 2023, according to the state's Department of Natural Resources.

The last time seismic activity was recorded in South Carolina was on Aug. 26, when tremors were recorded when a 1.9-magnitude quake struck the Jackson area of Aiken County, according to data from the state Department of Natural Resources.
This was the first earthquake recorded in McCormick County since May 25, 2019, and only the third time since 2006 that seismic activity has been confirmed there, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
History of Earthquakes in South Carolina
It was unusual for earthquakes to strike outside the Palmetto State's midlands, specifically outside Kershaw County, where 62 earthquakes have been confirmed since the end of June 2022, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
This is also where the most recent earthquake in South Carolina was recorded on June 29, 2022.
That day, two earthquakes — one of magnitude 3.5 and one of magnitude 3.6 — struck in a series of tremors and aftershocks. The quakes were the largest in South Carolina history in nearly a decade. A 4.1-magnitude quake struck McCormick County in 2014.
Anyone who felt tremors, shaking or heard the quake that occurred Sunday morning can notify the USGS.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the latest quake means at least 116 earthquakes have been recorded in the Palmetto State since the start of 2022. All but 13 of the quakes were in the Midlands.
In total, 108 earthquakes have struck the District of Columbia since a 3.3-magnitude quake was recorded on Dec. 27, 2021, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management said the quake that struck Sunday morning was rated as a minor earthquake, according to the Modified Mercalli Scale of Earthquake Intensity.
No major damage or injuries have been reported from the recent earthquakes.
According to Michigan Tech, earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or less typically go unnoticed and are usually recorded only by a seismograph. The university said any quake below magnitude 5.5 is unlikely to cause significant damage.
South Carolina used to experience between six and 10 earthquakes a year, according to a previous report from the South Carolina Geological Survey. There have been 130 earthquakes in South Carolina since Jan. 18, 2021, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
During a public meeting in 2022 to discuss earthquakes, geologist Scott Howard said that as many as 200 smaller earthquakes may have gone unnoticed or unrecorded.
Why are earthquakes increasing?
The explanation for this explosion has remained a mystery to scientists.
Some experts have suggested a link between the Watiri River and the earthquakes in northeastern Colombia. They say a combination of a single moderate earthquake in December 2022 and high water levels in the Watiri River during parts of 2022 and 2023 contributed to the earthquakes.
But no one has come up with a single cause for the tremors in the Midlands.
The city of Elgin, which lies on a fault line about 20 miles northeast of Columbia, has experienced an unusual wave of earthquakes, leaving some residents feeling uneasy.
Officials said the series of quakes may be the longest period of seismic activity in the state's history. But they don't think the series of small quakes is a sign that a larger quake could be on the way.
“While the frequency of these minor earthquakes may be concerning to some, we do not anticipate a major destructive earthquake in South Carolina at this time, although we know our state has experienced such earthquakes for decades,” South Carolina Emergency Management Director Kim Stinson said in an earlier media advisory.
“Now is a good time to review your insurance policies for earthquake coverage, insure any items in your home that could pose a risk during an earthquake, and remember to duck, cover and hold onto the ground until the earthquake passes. These are the precautions South Carolinians can take to properly prepare for earthquakes.”
The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in South Carolina — and on the U.S. East Coast — was a devastating 7.3 magnitude quake in Charleston in 1886.
The quake killed 60 people and was felt over an area of more than 2.5 million square miles, from Cuba to New York and from Bermuda to the Mississippi River, according to the state Department of Emergency Management.
