Muswellbrook earthquake shakes Sydney, NSW, Hunter region

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Hunter region of New South Wales at a depth of about 5 kilometres early Saturday morning, with more than 800 people in Sydney and New South Wales reporting the quake to the Australian Geoscience Agency.

Multiple aftershocks were felt around the epicentre near Muswellbrook, where 2,748 locations were reported to have suffered power outages.

Social media groups in eastern and western Sydney as well as other areas reported that the quake, which struck around 6am, was felt widely, with people waking up in their beds or shocked by the sudden shift of the layer beneath them.

“I felt an earthquake in the Muswellbrook area. I was standing in the car park and the ground was shaking. It scared the crap out of me,” one person wrote on the Earthquakes Downunder Facebook page.

New South Wales Police said they were not aware of any injuries or damage to infrastructure in the area.

The quake comes after a series of recent events, including a 4.7 magnitude quake felt by thousands across the state two weeks ago in the same area. Residents said some buildings in the Muswellbrook CBD saw windows shattered, chimneys collapsed and goods thrown off shelves.

After the previous quake, fault lines were close to the epicentre, probably caused by stress building up as Australia's continental plate slowly moves northeast at a rate of about seven centimetres per year, said senior seismologist Hadi Ghasemi of Geoscience Australia.
