Residents of New South Wales were woken up by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake that struck near Muswellbrook in the Hunter region.

Another “major” earthquake has struck New South Wales.

Hunter region residents were woken up by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake that struck just before 6am on Saturday near the town of Muswellbrook.

The earthquake was first reported by the Earthquake Research Center of X.

The Australian Geoscience Agency said the quake struck near Edderton at a depth of four kilometres.

Thousands of homes were without power after the earthquake.

Ausgrid confirmed that an estimated 2,500 homes in the Muswellbrook area were without power.

“Emergency crews began restoring power when it was safe to do so – and power has been restored to approximately 1,000 customers already this morning,” a company spokeswoman said.

The company confirmed that before 10:30 a.m. (Australian time) electricity had been restored to all its customers.

It also warned citizens to stay away from any fallen power lines and report them.

NSW Police said they and other emergency services were aware of the incident, but there were no reports of injuries or damage to infrastructure so far.

Those who felt the tremors were quick to report it on social media.

“This is not what I expected when I woke up this morning,” one woman said.

“Did everyone's rooms shake?” someone else wrote.

“I swear I just felt another earthquake,” said one New South Wales resident.

This is the second earthquake in the area with a magnitude of more than 4, after a 4.8-magnitude quake two weeks ago caused minor damage to buildings in Muswellbrook.

The Australian Geoscience Agency said the earthquake struck an area near Wollemi National Park.

The earthquake was felt in Sydney, and as far south as Canberra and Coffs Harbour.

One woman told 2GB that her whole house shook.

A NSW Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews were on the way to reports of minor damage to infrastructure near the epicentre in Muswellbrook, as well as Maitland, near Newcastle.

The earthquake was initially reported to have a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale, before being downgraded to 4.6.

One hour after the earthquake it was raised again to 4.8.

“There were two tremors (and it wasn't just an earthquake, it was a massive earthquake. The whole house shook, and then about half a minute later it shook again,” she said.
