Earthquake hits NSW weeks after two similar events

An earthquake struck the Hunter region of New South Wales two weeks after similar events in the region.

The Earthquake Research Centre recorded a 4.5 magnitude earthquake near Muswellbrook just before 8am on Saturday.

“Another major earthquake struck near Muswellbrook in New South Wales,” the National Centre of Meteorology said.

“This 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck at 5:58 a.m. local time.”

Ausgrid said 185 customers were still without power in Muswellbrook, Denman, Jerrys Plains, Burren and Bangalore.

Earlier, about 2,500 customers were affected.

Ausgrid said crews were on site patrolling for hazards and faults, and anyone in the area was warned to stay away from downed power lines.

The Australian Geoscience Agency said the quake occurred at a depth of five kilometres.

Senior seismologist Trevor Allen said the quake was felt outside the Hunter region.

“We've had about 850 reports from people in the community and we can see that the earthquake was felt strongly in the Muswellbrook area itself, and was also felt as far away as Wollongong, Tamworth and Gulgong,” he said.

About 100 people also reported some damage to their property.

The Australian Geoscience Service said reports of damage had not been verified, but included damage to masonry and hairline cracks in plaster.

The US Geological Survey also recorded the quake, saying it struck in Denman, about 26 kilometres southwest of Muswellbrook and 250 kilometres north of Sydney.

This earthquake comes two weeks after other earthquakes in the region.

On August 23, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck New South Wales near the proposed site of a nuclear power plant.

More than 2,500 people from as far away as Coffs Harbour, Sydney and Canberra reported the quake to the Australian Geoscience Agency.

The next day, on August 24, another earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck at 4:40 p.m. near Muswellbrook. It was felt by 600 people.
