A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck Muswellbrook in New South Wales and was felt in Sydney.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck New South Wales overnight, with Sydney residents waking up to the sound of shaking.

The quake struck near Muswellbrook in the state's Upper Hunter region, about 127 kilometres northwest of Newcastle, at 5.58am on Saturday, according to Geoscience Australia.

It was registered as a magnitude 4.7 on the Richter scale, but was later downgraded to 4.5.

The Australian Geoscience Agency said the quake occurred at a depth of five kilometres.

The earthquake knocked out power to about 2,500 homes in the area, according to Ausgrid.

As of 8.30am, power had been restored to most homes and businesses, with crews working to restore connectivity to about 200 properties.

He urged people to stay away from any fallen power lines.

Local police said they did not report any injuries or damage to infrastructure.

More than 900 people reported feeling the tremors from as far north as Port Macquarie to Wollongong.

“This woke me up,” one Sydney resident said online.

“My bed shook for a few seconds,” said one western Sydney resident.

A member of the Muswellbrook community said they were standing in a parking lot when “the ground was shaking”.

“You scared me a lot,” they said.

A second earthquake of magnitude 2.5 was reported in the area at around 6.10 a.m. at a depth of 1 km.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no threat of a tsunami in Australia.

This comes at a time when the region was hit by two earthquakes in just a few days, two weeks ago.

More than 3,000 people reported feeling the quake, which caused power outages and forced some schools to evacuate.

Another earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck near Muswellbrook, 26 kilometres away, at about 4.30pm the following day.

A Muswellbrook resident said Saturday's quake was “more violent” than the events two weeks ago.

“The furniture and floor moved from side to side. The closet doors flew open, and the things on the bedside table almost fell over,” he said.
