Allen said the area is at slightly higher risk of more earthquakes of similar magnitude in the coming weeks.

“There is a small chance that a larger event will occur, given the underlying conditions, but the stronger possibility is that we will start to see a decrease in the number of earthquakes and hopefully a decrease in their magnitude,” he said.

The Hunter Valley is home to significant mining operations, which can be a contributing factor to earthquake activity.

The lack of historical earthquake baseline data in the region has made it difficult to determine the role of mining in recent seismic events, Allen said.

“When you remove large amounts of rock mass, you change the pressure conditions around the area near the mine, and that can cause the ground to respond, and it does that by triggering earthquakes,” he said.

The federal opposition has proposed the Liddell power station near Muswellbrook as a potential site for a nuclear reactor and power station as part of the party's energy transition plan.

Allen encouraged anyone who experienced an earthquake to register it on Geoscience Australia's felt earthquake reporting system.

“If you find yourself experiencing an earthquake or ground shaking, our best advice is to drop, cover yourself and hold on,” he said.

“That means getting on the floor and covering your head, and if you can, getting under a sturdy table or desk and waiting until the shaking stops.”
