Pair of 3.5 and 3.9 magnitude earthquakes near Ontario rattle parts of Southern California – Orange County Register

Two earthquakes struck Southern California on Saturday morning, September 7, the second of which was stronger.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck at 10:34 a.m. 4.4 miles east-southeast of Ontario, 4.7 miles north-northwest of Eastville, 4.7 miles west-northwest of Jurupa Valley and 5.3 miles south of Rancho Cucamonga.

Today we are seeing a small cluster of earthquakes on the Fontana fault line, a line running northeastward from many small earthquakes. So far today we have had magnitude 3.9 and 3.5 earthquakes and several magnitude 1 and 2 earthquakes. I have seen this type of earthquake in Fontana dozens of times in my decades of seismic monitoring in Southern California.

The initial USGS report said the first quake struck at 10:05 a.m., with its epicenter 4.3 miles southeast of Ontario, 4.4 miles north-northwest of Eastville, 4.9 miles west-northwest of Jurupa Valley, and 5.5 miles east of Chino.

The initial shock and subsequent earthquake occurred at a depth of about three miles.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The US Geological Survey said the most powerful quake was felt in Riverside and Orange counties but also in Long Beach and West Covina.
