Series of earthquakes, including a 3.9-magnitude one, strikes near Ontario

Two small earthquakes struck near Ontario, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Southland residents, who are among those feeling the heat, also experienced some minor tremors Saturday morning.

The first quake — later deemed an earthquake — struck at 10:05 a.m., centered 4.3 miles southeast of Ontario, according to the survey. It had a magnitude of 3.5. It was followed by a 3.9-magnitude quake at 10:34 a.m., centered about 4.4 miles southeast of Ontario and 4.7 miles northwest of Jurupa Valley in Riverside County.

About an hour later, at 11:45 a.m., a 2.6-magnitude aftershock struck about two miles southeast of Ontario, according to ABC 7.

No damage was reported. However, as usual, locals flooded social media with comments and information about the earthquake. Users often gather on “earthquake Twitter” to share memes or videos that prove the earthquake occurred.

@QuakesInCA, which uses data from the USGS, noted several aftershocks following the quakes this morning. Most of those quakes, which struck within five miles of Ontario, were magnitude 2.0.

Dr. Lucy Jones, a prominent seismologist and guest on John Mulaney's Earthquakes: Everybody's In LA Emmy, wrote on X, “Today we have a small swarm on the Fontana seismic line, a line that strikes northeast of many small earthquakes. Today so far we have a M3.9, an M3.5, and several M1s and M2s. I have seen these types of earthquakes. [sic] “This phenomenon has happened dozens of times in Fontana during my decades of earthquake monitoring in Southern California.”

Although Los Angeles has recently experienced a series of earthquakes this summer, Jones debunked the myth of “earthquake weather.” “The earthquakes we had today are one of many we’ve had this year — most of which have happened when the weather wasn’t so hot,” she said.
