California's extreme heat did not cause a series of earthquakes.

Although you might think of earthquakes as a problem specific to the western United States, some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history have occurred in the East.

LOS ANGELES – A series of earthquakes struck Southern California on Saturday, but despite some speculation that high temperatures may have contributed to the seismic activity, there's no evidence to support that idea.

The quakes were centered about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, near the city of Ontario, and the strongest had a magnitude of 3.9.

Residents of Los Angeles and other communities in Orange and San Diego counties reported feeling the tremors, but no damage was reported in the immediate aftermath.

The USGS said that because of the possibility of an earthquake, a tremor alert was sent to cell phones and other devices to alert residents and visitors to the event in the moments before the tremor was felt.

A typical alert message reads, “Earthquake detected! Drop, cover, and hold on. Protect yourself.” The purpose of the alert is to reduce the potential for injury and loss of life during major events.

For many years, geologists have linked earthquakes in the area to what is known as the Fontana trend, not too far from the San Andreas Fault.

In general, earthquakes in the area are considered weak, with all falling into the minor category of less than 4.0 magnitude.

The quakes occurred at the same time that large parts of California and the West were experiencing a heat dome, leading some people to wonder if record heat might be responsible.

More than 25 million people were under heat warnings that stretched from the country's southern border through Washington and Idaho.

But according to the USGS, this type of daily extreme weather does not promote seismic activity.

“There is no such thing as ‘earthquake weather.’ Statistically, there is a roughly even distribution of earthquakes in cold weather, hot weather, rainy weather, etc.,” the USGS previously said.

The earthquakes in Southern California weren't the only seismic events recorded in the state. Earlier in the day, a 4.3-magnitude quake struck north of the Bay Area, and a 2.7-magnitude quake struck near Lake Tahoe.

On average, the state experiences more than a dozen small earthquakes a day, but almost all of them are detected only by seismometers and are rarely felt.

Seismologists say that major events that cause property damage occur only two or three times a year.

The largest earthquake recorded in the state was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and was caused by a shift along the San Andreas Fault.
