A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences said. The quake was 10 kilometres deep, the centre added.

“An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan at 12:58 pm (India time) today,” the National Seismological Centre said.

This is the second time that Delhi and its surrounding areas have witnessed minor earthquakes in two weeks. On August 29, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, with its source at a depth of 255 km below the surface.

Videos circulating on social media showed ceiling fans, chairs and other objects briefly shaking during the tremors. “People in Delhi National Capital Region felt strong tremors,” commented one user from Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Delhi is prone to earthquakes due to its location in an active seismic zone near the Himalayas. India is divided into four seismic zones, with Zone 5 being the most seismically active. Delhi falls within Zone 4.
