At least 19 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza 'safe zone' for displaced | BBC News

At least 19 people have been killed in an Israeli strike in the designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry. The explosions destroyed an area full of displaced Palestinian shops in al-Mawasi, southwest of Khan Younis, leaving huge craters in the sand. Al-Mawasi has been full of Palestinians living in tents since the Israeli army declared the coastal area a “safe zone” during the land invasions of Khan Younis and Rafah. Israel's military said its planes targeted what it called “top Hamas terrorists” operating there, a claim denied by Hamas. Hundreds of thousands of people have sought refuge in Gaza's humanitarian zone on the southern Mediterranean coast after being ordered to evacuate there by the Israeli army over the past 11 months.
