Hanyu Yuzuru's “Challenge” – Helping Hands for Noto Peninsula Earthquake Victims

Thirteen years ago, Hanyu's hometown of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture was hit by the 9.1-magnitude Great East Japan Earthquake, which triggered a tsunami and a nuclear power plant disaster, paralyzing the country's eastern coast.

Hanyu had to spend time in an evacuation center and the rink he skated on was destroyed. After retiring from competitive skating in 2022, he has since produced a tribute performance to all those affected by the disaster, “Notte Stellata.”

The Noto Peninsula earthquake was the deadliest since March 11, 2011. It killed 360 people and injured 1,300 in nine prefectures, including Ishikawa. Although the tragedy did not receive the global attention that the Great East Japan Earthquake did, the Noto Peninsula was catastrophic by any measure.

Sunday's show will not be open to the public as there are no stages at the venue. The show will not be broadcast outside Japan due to rights issues, and can only be viewed domestically through one streaming site. Purchase details can be found here.

The public display will also be presented at four locations in Ishikawa – Suzu, Wajima, Shika, and Nanao.

Proceeds from the live broadcast will be donated to Ishikawa Prefecture to support relief efforts.

Despite the small crowd, Hanyu – who will be joined by fellow Olympians Suzuki Akiko and Miyahara Satoko, and Four Continents champion Mura Takahito – believes the show should go ahead in Ishikawa.

“Personally, I think skating on location has a lot of meaning. I think I’ll feel a lot during the performance,” Hanyu said. “There should be a skate that I can only skate on when I’m there.

“A little bit of hope, a few smiles while skating with my friends. That's something I really want to provide, even if just for a split second.”
