5.7 magnitude earthquake hits Punjab: Pakistan Disaster Management Authority

A statement issued by the Punjab Regional Disaster Management Authority confirmed that the earthquakes occurred today, Wednesday, in all areas of Punjab, including Lahore.

“The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7 on the Richter scale,” Mazhar Hussain, a spokesman for the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority, told Dawn.com.

“The epicentre of the earthquake was near DJ Khan (Shadi Wala) while its depth was 10 km,” the spokesman confirmed, adding that the administration in Punjab was examining the buildings damaged by the tremors.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and struck at 7:28 a.m. in Khan district.

The spokesman added that the authorities are on alert “to deal with the aftershocks of the earthquake.”

“Local emergency operation centres across Punjab including the authority’s regional control room are operational 24/7,” the authority spokesman said, adding that damages can be reported on the authority’s hotline 1129.

The development comes a day after a separate 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, mostly in the Swat Valley.

The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the quake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and struck at 8:20 a.m.

The Pakistani Associated Press reported that the earthquakes were felt by residents of Swat and surrounding areas, causing temporary panic among the population.

The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 151 kilometers, and its epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a seismically active region known for frequent earthquakes.
