Malibu Earthquake Shakes Southern California – NBC Los Angeles

An earthquake centered in the Malibu area Thursday morning sent tremors through wide swaths of Southern California from the coast to inland communities.

The initial magnitude of the earthquake was downgraded from 5.1 to 4.7. It was followed by aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 1.8 to 3.4, with more aftershocks possible in the coming hours and days.

The quake struck at 7:28 a.m. at a depth of about seven miles in Malibu, Hermosa Beach, La Mirada, Anaheim, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Hills and parts of the San Fernando Valley. People are more likely to feel shaking from shallow quakes, which range from 0 to 40 miles deep.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

Los Angeles Metro trains will be slowed to check for damage, a standard procedure after an earthquake.

Southern California has been shaken by several earthquakes in recent weeks, including a 5.2 magnitude quake south of Bakersfield.

“We’ve had earthquakes, none of them devastating, and all of them small,” said seismologist Dr Lucy Jones. “It’s a really good reminder that the quiet of the last two decades doesn’t reflect the long-term picture.”
