An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Southern California on Thursday morning.

The quake struck at about 7:28 a.m. Pacific time and was at a depth of about seven miles.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck four miles north of Malibu.

The agency said the state's ShakeAlert system was activated in response to the event.

The ShakeAlert system estimated the quake's magnitude to be greater than 5.0 on the Richter scale. The USGS said alerts were sent to mobile phones.

Shortly after, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake was reported near Malibu.

Several people reported feeling the quake in the Inland Empire, Orange County and along the coast, according to KTLA.

Social media users took to X to report feeling shaken and waking up before their alarms went off. Others posted photos of fallen plants.

The National Weather Service office in Los Angeles said a tsunami was not expected from the earthquake.

No damage was reported to any Malibu schools, according to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it surveyed the city by land, air and sea and found no major damage to infrastructure or structures. No injuries were reported.

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said it was actively monitoring the impacts.

California experiences approximately 500 earthquakes each year, all large enough to be detected and felt by local residents.
